D is for Daring to Dare

You may have noticed from my sidebar that I love collecting quotes, and I recently came upon another one that really touched me. I am a big fan of Maya Angelou, and I love this quote from her:

"I believe that the most important single thing,
beyond discipline and creativity,
is daring to dare."

As the description of my blog suggests, I spent a good part of my life considering lots of things "impossible" before I ever even tried them. So this quote really spoke to me, as I feel that daring to believe that something is possible is half the battle.

Or at the very least, it's a good start!

I wish I had started "daring to dare" sooner, but I realize there's no point crying over spilled milk. When it comes to regrets or past mistakes, I try to keep another quote from Ms. Angelou in mind.

"I did then what I knew how to do.
Now that I know better, I do better."

  2. Both of those quotes say so much in so few lines. The second one especially resonates with me. It implies that doing what you knew at the time, even though you know better now, is still a good thing, not to be discounted just becaue you may have known less or differently back then. I love statements that focus on the positive.

As far as daring to dare, you never know until you try, as you've found out. When we are children, we tend not to let our fears hold us back from trying something, we just dive in and do it, no harm, no foul. It's a too bad that as adults our inhibitions, fear of shame or embarrassment, and other mental barriers seem to take over. I will certainly work not to let that happen and keep "daring to dare" in mind.

    Thanks, Julie!!

  3. Great quotes! And a great D! I think we sometimes think too much about what could be lost if we dare and fail when we should think more about what could be gained if we dare.

Angelou's quote is ohhhh sooooo true!

  7. Ooh! I love Maya Angelou! She's so awesome. And I'm in the same boat as you. In my 20s, I didn't do much cos I was too afraid. Now, approaching my mid 30s, I'm ready to "dare to dare." Thanks for the post!

  14. That last quote, in particular, made me think of one of my own favorites: "Try again. Fail again. Fail better." - Beckett.
