Killer Characters Blogfest: Supporting Characters

Today is Day One of the Killer Characters Blogfest, hosted by E.R. King and Deana Barnhart, and it's all about killer supporting characters.

I am cheating a little bit, as the characters I chose are primarily known as movie characters, but since the movie was based on a book I figured they could still qualify. They are so memorable to me that I couldn't resist.

I picked the velociraptors from the first Jurassic Park movie, as I think they definitely fit the bill for scary, awesome, and killer (literally!) characters. Jurassic Park (the original only) is one of my all-time favorite movies, and the raptors are a big part of the reason why.

They had me on the edge of my seat whenever they were on the screen.

I was a nervous wreck when the raptors opened the door and came inside the kitchen where the children were hiding. That remains one of the scariest and most intense scenes I've ever watched.

The raptors rocked, not only because they were so evil, but also because they were so smart. I loved their tag-team ways, and their facial expressions when they were plotting their next moves were totally awesome.

All of the dinosaurs were great, but, to me, the velociraptors stole the movie. When it comes to memorable supporting characters, they will always have a spot on my list.

  1. Oh my gosh, so creepy. I felt the same way. I was on edge every time they were on screen. I didn't even feel that way about the T-Rex! Great choice!

  2. It took me years to be able to watch this movie all the way through without hiding behind something. It's scary! And the raptors, with their little creepy sounds were a big part of that.

  3. I knew the director would be too much of a wimp to let the raptors get the kids. I really wanted to see that happen.

  4. The raptors!! Absolutely, and VERY scary. You're spot-on about that kitchen scene-scared the bejeesus out of me (still does, whenever I watch that movie). Great pick!

Julie, thanks for the visit to Quiet Laughter, and I look forward to following your blog too!

  5. What a FABULOUS choice. They are so creepy. I think it's because they seemed to be given the abilities to think like a human but they couldn't be reasoned with like a human. They were like really smart killing machines.

  7. This is the second blog today that someone has animals as their supporting character. Great choice! They were very effective at scaring audiences. Who wouldn't be scared of being hunted by this tag team?

@Shelly, that's a great way to put it, and so true. They were so smart that just made them even more terrifying.

@Stephen, thanks! LOL, I know I was scared to death at the thought of being hunted by them, I probably had nightmares about it!

@Tara, that's a good point, they could be the antagonists as well. I just love them, so evil!

@LG, LOL, yeah, I think I was covering my eyes a lot during that kitchen scene. Just talking about it makes me want to watch this again, I so love it.

  14. Great pick! I watched the first five minutes of the movie before I ran out crying. I had to call my mom to come and get me from the theater. And I hadn't even seen the raptor...just heard it, yikes!!

  15. Oh man! Fabulous choice here - and different. I agree the 1st movie was the best and the velociraptors keep things crazy-intense!

  16. We nicknamed my son veloco because he bats his arms around while he’s watching his team play soccer. He can’t sit still.

They are quite scary, and they are totally a huge part of the movie. They did it, so you really do see their personalities. SCURRY.

  20. Jurassic Park is one of my all-time favorite movies. Bet you'd never have guessed that ... lol

I never get tired of watching it. The raptors were great. My favorite scene is with the T Rex and the cars.

    Great pic!

  21. I've never trembled in a movie the way I did watching Jurassic Park. Man, I just love that movie and will never forget the way the theatre rumbled in surround sound when the T-rex was approaching. True movie magic. The T-rex scene with the kids in the truck is my fave scene. :)

  23. Love that movie. Couldn't get enough of it as a kid. :)

  24. Fantastic choice for supporting characters! They were much scarier than the T-Rex, because they were clever!

  25. Gotta love the velociraptors. Despite the size difference, I think they upstaged T-rex. My oldest is dying to watch Jurassic Park. I can't wait to see how she handles the kitchen scene.

  26. Watched this with two of my grandkids. I don't think they realized how hard my heart was pounding. Had to be tough -- yeh, right!

  27. @Cassie, ha ha, I wasn't even thinking about that opening scene where you just hear the raptors but you are so right, that scared the heck out of me too!

@Abby, yeah, I remember I couldn't wait to see the sequel but then I didn't like it at all, the original is the one I just love.

@Jenny, oh, how cute about your son's nickname. It was kind of amazing how much personality the raptors had on screen, but they really did pull that off.

    @Misha, they are!

    @Tasha, thanks!

@Yvonne, oh, how interesting! They must find such fascinating things along that coast.

@Mary, I love the T Rex and cars too, that was so intense. I never tire of the movie either, I totally love it.

@Pk, oh, you're so right, the sound when T Rex was approaching was so amazing. I shiver just thinking about that glass trembling on the dashboard.

@Melissa, I agree, this is a great fest, very fun! :)

@David, I totally agree, I still love it so much.

@Jen, that's how I felt, they were just so smart. I read somewhere that they were evil geniuses, and I so agreed LOL.

@Tim, I hope your daughter enjoys the movie and doesn't get too scared. I agree, I loved the T-Rex but in the end I had to give it to the raptors LOL.

@Giggles, LOL! I remember watching it with my nieces and I'm pretty sure I was the most frightened one in the room.

  28. Hey there--very cool to meet a fellow writer AND librarian! I thought Jurassic Park was scary, but I also thought Night in the Museum was scary too. Scarier than I expected.

  29. Great choice. I still cannot watch this movie without hiding my eyes.

  30. @Catherine, oh, it's great you are a librarian too! Great to meet you! :)

@Melissa, LOL, I still hide my eyes too at some parts. :)
