December IWSG: My Writing Space

Hello, friends! Today is the day for the December meeting of The Insecure Writer's Support Group. The group was founded by our Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh. To view list members and this month's co-hosts, visit the IWSG page here.

This month's IWSG question is:

What are five objects we'd find in your writing space?

I am cheating a little here because I don't really have five objects in my space, unless you count things like lamps. My writing space is my living room couch and the only writing-related object I have there is my laptop, when I'm writing on it.

Even though it's a bit boring, I love my writing space because I share it with these two handsome guys.

If you've followed this blog for any length of time you probably already know my dog Clancy and my cat Nate. These two are both eleven years old and they have been along for the ride on every step of my writing journey since they came to live with me.

One is the boss:

The other is the annoyed colleague who really just wants to sleep:

The Ohio State throw that Clancy is trying to use as his pillow there is a third constant in my space.

So that's my writing space - my couch, my laptop, my throw, and my two furbabies. So I guess I do have five things to list, even though Clancy and Nate aren't things. Like I said, I'm cheating a little.

I hope to spend a good part of December on my couch writing and I'm counting on boss Nate to get after me if I start slacking off. I didn't finish NaNo, or even come close, but I did make progress on my story so I'm hoping to continue with that this month and finish off the year on a productive front.

I am looking forward to catching up with everyone after taking last month off. Happy December!

  3. HA! I bet Madeline's right about Nate's opinion about that space. We always say our cats are really nice to share their bed with us. :)

I'm glad to hear the Na-No helped you make progress on your WIP. THAT makes it a win, as far as I'm concerned.

  4. Adorable! I have my faithful furbaby next to me too. He's currently snoring. *LOL*

  5. Hi Julie, I like the fact that you write on your living room couch. Earlier I used to write on my bed, but nowadays I've moved to my writing desk.
And your pets make perfect writing company.

  6. Love your furbabies! Your place looks so warm and welcoming! Perfect for writing! My space in Florida is my couch as well with Hamlet, laptop, laptop table ((Im stretching here. LOL), and my coffee cup. LOL.

Glad you made progress on your piece. I am rushing to finish off the memoir I'm working on before the end of the year. YIKES only a bit over three weeks~ lots to do! Still have about a third left. I will be forcing myself to write a minimum of five pages a day and hopefully more. That's my goal anyway.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS to you, too, Julie and may the new year bring you health and happiness!

  7. You're surrounded by some very inspiring items! Have a wonderful holiday season, Julie.

  8. Very cute companions! I can't write on the couch because it's too relaxing. Cats always end up as the boss, don't they?

  9. Writing progress is a win! Congrats on your writing!
I really should have included my cat and dog on my list of writing "objects/companions" although I don't take them with me if I write somewhere other than home. At home, they follow me wherever I go and like yours, my cat is the boss, and my dog reminds me I need to keep writing or rest. :)

  10. Aw, Clancy and Nate look like ideal writing companions! I write on my sofa as well. Go Buckeyes!

  11. What wonderful writing buddies! I write from my dining room table usually, but it's too close to the kitchen :)

  12. Awww - there is nothing boring about your fur babies! I love having my animals around - they bring such love and support to our lives.

  13. Hooray for making progress on your story. That is an amazing thing, and is always a win!

I always love your pics of your fur babies. My cat is always in my lap when I sit at my desk, but I don't think she cares about how much work I get done so much as she just wants me to sit still while doing it.

  14. I love the look on Nate's face in that photo. He does look like the boss! Better get those words in.

Wishing you all the best this holiday season, and a very Happy New Year.

  15. Ah love your fur babies. We have 3 dogs German Shepherd, toy Chihuahua and mingping mix with Chihuahua all my roommates. I miss having cats. Happy IWSG Day.

  17. "Annoyed colleague" -oh my gosh, Julie, I literally laughed out loud. Mostly because, while I don't have a cat and a dog, I have two dogs and it's the same situation. I have a writing space but lately, I've been hanging out on my couch to write. Maybe I'll go ask the boss dog if I can have my writing chair back. haha

  20. Love that those two have been together so long (well, all three of you). I lost my dog friend of thirteen years last year. Took a year off from having a dog, but then I saw my latest guy at the shelter and knew it was time to get another.

  21. I have a really simple space too and my dog often keeps me company. Happy Holidays!

  22. I love seeing everyone's animals!! Have a great Christmas!

  23. I think pets are truly wonderful additions to any space, especially writing. Good luck on keeping your story going.

  24. You know having anything Ohio State is fighting words for this Michigander. LOL Enjoy your furry friends.

  25. Your furbabies are adorable! No, they aren't things, but they count. If they love being in your writing space, they count.

Love the image you put at the end of your post, too. So beautiful. Thank you.

  26. Nate and Clancy are adorable. I don't think I'd get much writing done with such cute companions to distract me :-)

  27. Nate reminds me of my Bones. Same coloring. I roam the house with my laptop to write. I'll be in different rooms every day, wherever my mood and muse takes me.

Julie, Hoping you and your family have a Merry and Blessed Christmas!

  28. Progress on your story is good. And sometimes, it's nice just to relax every once in a while. Chill like it looks like the boss is doing. Or sleep like the annoyed colleague. :D

  29. It's great to have pets around when you're writing, unfortunately my cats insist on walking across my keyboard all the time. Have a Merry Christmas!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Wow, you've got quite an audience there. I'd find them a bit distracting though;)

    ReplyDelete
  31. How you can write with so many distractions, I remember when Patches used to insist on sitting on my lap. She'd rest her head on my laptop. But no matter her position, I tried to accommodate her. She was my baby, and way more important than writing.

    Merry Christmas!

  32. So cute! I usually have a cat or two in my writing space. :)

  33. Furbabies are always nice to have around when you're writing, except when they get in front of the computer screen. Happy Holidays, Julie!

  34. Happy Holidays!
P.S. How's the Paris story unfolding...? Hope it's going well.

  35. Gotta love the pets as they are family members too. Hopefully they do not vie for your attention when writing.

  36. Hi Julie,

I firmly believe that our furry family friends help inspire our writing. I know that Penny was very adept at getting her writing um, pawblished.

    Take care, my thoughtful friend.
