FLAMING GUEST POST PART FOUR:

Things happened during the fire that I didn’t know about at the time and heard about later. Like the odd thing that my mom saved from our house in the middle of all the chaos. You see, when there’s a disaster knocking at your front door and you have to dash in and grab whatever you can, your mind can go blank. You can run around in circles helplessly.

Afterward, my mom told me about a reporter taking a picture of her coming out of the house with a bag of potatoes. Yes, a bag of potatoes. A really big bag. To this day, if you ask her why she grabbed that, she’ll say, “Because I had five kids to feed, and it was a brand-new bag.”

Logical.

Luckily, we weren’t stuck eating potatoes for days.

Also, I was really glad when I saw the newspaper the next day and my mom was not in it with her bag of potatoes. That would’ve been embarrassing to explain to my classmates.

Karen put her arms around Beth. “It’s okay. I’m just glad our houses are still standing.”

Beth nodded. She was grateful for that, too. So far, no one’s house had been touched. “Do you need my help getting stuff out of your home?”

“I grabbed a few things already. I was running around in circles in there because I could barely think.” She gave Beth an embarrassed smile. “I actually brought out a bag of potatoes. And a reporter from the newspaper came up to me and asked me my name.” She covered her face with her hands. “He got a picture of me doing that.”

Despite the chaos, Beth gave a small laugh. “I brought out our coffeemaker and blender.”

Karen laughed, too. Then her smile faded. “If I could, I’d put a giant bag around my whole house and carry it out of here.”

Beth nodded. “So would I.”

Celebrating Ohioana & A Visit From Chrys Fey

It's Friday and that means it's time to celebrate. This week I'm celebrating that I got accepted to be part of the 2017 Ohioana Book Festival, which will be held in April. This will be my third time participating in the fest and I love it. I was so thrilled when I got my acceptance confirmation and I can't wait be there again, this time with Baby Moo's Great Escape!

I asked Chys this question in preparation for her visit:

Have you ever lived through one of the natural disasters you have written about in your series? If so, can you share a little about the experience?

ANSWER:

Hurricane Crimes was strongly based on my experience with Hurricane Francis and Tropical Storm Fay. Hurricane Francis was one of three hurricanes that struck Florida, one right after the other, in 2004. As a matter of fact, while writing Hurricane Crimes, I imagined Beth’s house was the house I was living in when those hurricanes hit. Unlike Beth’s house, mine survived. The only damaged was to parts of the porch and the garage door, which was knocked down.

The flooding in Hurricane Crimes was based on the floods from Tropical Storm Fay. She made landfall on Florida four times. Many places flooded. Where I was living, the streets flooded so much that it looked like my house was floating in the middle of a lake.

Thankfully, I have not experienced an earthquake or tsunami, but Book 4 (which I will be editing soon) is about wildfires, and I have experienced those. The fire in that story, which threatens Beth and Donovan’s home, is taken directly from my childhood memories. Every part of it: my best friend’s dad saying the fire looked like it was right next to my house, the moment when I see a crowd of gawkers at the end of the street and I yell at them, my dad on the roof with a hose, the firefighter who got burned, the brush truck that got stuck in the fiery woods…everything.

Even real-life random moments were used fictitiously, such as my mom coming out of the house with a bag of potatoes, and one of my cats running toward the fire. She survived, but another one of my cats, Angel, had also run toward the flames. She came home that night. Burned. She died a few days later on my twelfth birthday.

I fully believe in using our experiences in our stories, and that’s what I do.

IWSG and a visit from Chrys Fey

Happy IWSG day, all! As usual it's hard to believe another month has come and gone and it's time for another meeting. Even harder to believe is that we're getting close to the halfway point of 2015!

Strangely enough this is another month when I'm not feeling insecure and in fact I'm really just excited and enthusiastic about the rest of the year. I had a fantastic time at the Ohioana Book Festival last month and also had another great experience doing a presentation for a class at the university where I work. I know I'll always have some public speaking anxiety, but overall I've managed to kick that fear to the curb. I'm looking forward to being part of Book Con in New York at the end of May and two more book events in the fall.

I'm also thrilled that my ideas for another Danny Fitzpatrick story have fallen into place and I've actually started writing it. I know I have a long way to go but I'm feeling great about it so far. I'm hoping for a writing filled summer!

Hi everyone. I’m Chrys Fey and I am here to interview Avrianna Heavenborn, the detective from Ghost of Death. I hope you enjoy it. :)

Thanks for clearing some time out of your busy schedule to talk to me, Avrianna.

You’re welcome, Chrys. Sorry you had to come all the way out to my office.

That was no problem. Your office is...*looks around*...clean and sparse. *smiles*

I know, it sucks. I have a case to solve, though, so let’s get this show on the road.

Sure.

1. How did you become a detective?

It wasn’t easy. A lot of people wanted to see me fail, but I didn’t quit. The moment I graduated high school, I enrolled in the police academy. I was the youngest one in my class, and there was only a few other females in the academy. I worked as a beat cop for a while until I could get the title I coveted...detective. I did it fast and I did it good.

2. What’s the worst murder case you had to solve?

There’s been a lot of bloody crime scenes that I’ve seen and countless gruesome murders. After a while, they all start to blend together into one long gory blur. There was one where twin teenage girls were raped and murdered. Another where a mother of five was found beaten to death in a Dumpster. Right now, there’s so many images flashing in my mind that I can’t pick just one. Sorry.

3. That’s understandable. What have you learned over the years?

That anyone can be a killer. Anyone.

4. That’s very true and very scary. What went through your mind when you saw Jolie Montgomery’s crime scene?

Well, I was doing what any good detective would do. I was scrutinizing the area and body for clues about the murder, the victim, and the murderer. But...there was a moment when I had a temporary weakness. You see, Jolie was found in an alley. I once lived in an alley after I ran away from foster care. And for a second, I pictured myself as Jolie.

5. How do you plan on finding Jolie’s killer?

Oh, I have my ways. And I’m good. I’ll interview the people closest to her, find common threads, look for lies, apply pressure, eliminate suspects, collect evidence, and then make the arrest.

6. Do you have any leads?

Not yet, but I will and you can count on that!

7. If you could tell all the criminals out there something, what would it be?

To watch out, because I’m coming for each and every one of them.

They’d be smart not to mess with you. And I should know...I created you.

She panted with fear. What if they see the chest? What if we get caught? What if my breath stinks and I’m breathing right into Officer Hottie’s face? She shut her mouth and let oxygen flow through her nose.

Her mouth fell open and her breath was reversing into her lungs, but before she could make a sound, Officer Herro lowered his lips to hers, silencing her. Stunned, she could only lie beneath him with her eyes wide and her body tense. She couldn’t believe he was kissing her. She wanted to push him back, but knew if she did he might hit the inside of the chest, giving away their hiding place. That was when she realized he was kissing her so she wouldn’t gasp.

She let her body relax. After her initial shock faded, she was able to feel his lips. They were comforting and caused a reaction deep inside her. She couldn’t stop her lips from reacting to his. It was an innocent connection, a soft touch of lips. Until his hand slid from her shoulder to her neck and the kiss deepened into something else.
