Visits to E.J. Wesley and Laurie's Thoughts & Reviews

Just a quick post to say The Ghosts of Aquinnah tour is continuing with two more stops today.

First up, I'm excited to visit E.J. Wesley at The Open Vein for an interview with my character Stella Winslow. Back when Polar Night came out, E.J. asked if I would be interested in doing character interviews at his site. I had such fun doing those that I was anxious to do them again for this book, so I'm grateful to E.J. for giving me the idea in the first place. Please visit us here for the interview!

Also, I was interviewed myself by Laurie at Laurie's Thoughts and Reviews. I met Laurie during my Polar Night Book Blast and she is wonderful about promoting authors and books at both of her sites. Please stop by and visit me here!

Thanks to everyone who has visited me at my stops, and huge thanks to all the hosts who have allowed me to take over their sites. It's been a fun week and I'm looking forward to more tomorrow and next week.

See you at E.J.'s and Laurie's!

"-- a tense story with some unique elements. A very good read!" Alex J. Cavanaugh, Amazon Bestselling Author of CassaFire and CassaStar

"--reminds me of t.v. episodes; short, sweet, resolved in under an hour. But I’m talking good, interesting t.v.. The kind that draws you in and leaves you eagerly awaiting next week's episode." Books & Things Blog

"The writing is amazing - even in just a few short pages, you can see that right off the bat. It really engages you in the story and keeps you reading along until the end." Missy's Reads & Reviews Blog

"Blood Fugue has one of those endings that you least expect, giving it that "OMG" reaction." Insane About Books Blog

"His action scenes are thrilling, sometimes cringe-worthy. No doubt I spent the entire read curled over my computer not wanting it to end." robgirlbooks, Amazon Review

About the Author

Growing up in small-town Oklahoma, there were limits on the amount and types of entertainment at my disposal. Perhaps that’s why I set my imagination free. After collecting degrees in psychology and counseling, life brought me to Missouri, Texas, and Northern California—where I currently read, write, and live. I fill my spare time playing video games, watching movies, planning for the zombie apocalypse, reading graphic novels, and playing with my dogs.

My passion for New Adult literature led me to producing the weekly New Adult Lit Chat on Twitter, and contributing to the NA Alley Blog. I’m also the author of the Moonsongs Books, a series of New Adult, speculative-rural fantasy novelettes.

The Big A-Z Reveal, Polar Night Character Closeups, and The Write Space with Ellie Garratt

Busy day here today! And just when I said I was going to cut back a bit on blogging LOL.

First up, today is the day for The Big Reveal Blog Hop, hosted by Brits in the USA and Mina Lobo, so I am excited to reveal my theme for this year's A-Z in April Challenge.

I'm writing about Alaska this year to go along with the publication of my novel Polar Night. Alaska is the setting for the novel, and I had such fun learning about this fascinating state that I thought it would be a great A-Z topic. Looking forward to seeing what others have chosen for their themes!

And speaking of Polar Night, this is the last day for my Character Closeups feature on E.J. Wesley's site The Open Vein. Aleksei Nechayev is hanging out with E.J., so I'm a little worried about E.J.'s safety. Hope everything will go smoothly, as Aleksei is a dangerous guy to have around. Visit us here to get to know Aleksei and to sign up if you'd like to be included in my ebook giveaway.

Danny and Amanda already visited E.J. this week and had a great time. Thanks again to E.J. and to everyone who stopped by to visit!

Now on to the big news of the day! Ellie Garratt, author of Passing Time, is here today as part of her blog tour. I'm thrilled to be part of the tour and excited to have Ellie here to share her writing space with all of us.

Take it away, Ellie!

The Write Space

Thank you for hosting me, Julie. It’s an honour to be passing time with you and your readers.

I believe every writer needs a space of his or her own to write, no matter how small. Why? It focuses the mind on the task in hand. It lets the business-like part of the brain know you are serious. It also lets other family members know you can’t be disturbed unless there is an emergency or they are bringing copious amounts of coffee and biscuits.

Like most writers I dream of having a room just for writing. It would have a large mahogany desk, fireplace, wall-to-wall bookshelves, a majestic view, and maybe even a dog sat by my feet. The reality for most writers is the complete opposite.

When I first started writing I sat on the sofa with a lap tray or used the dining room table. Both were great but meant I had to keep putting my writing stuff away. Then I bought an old writers bureau, which meant I could leave everything out all the time. It was small but worked perfectly. I’ve since moved house, and my bedroom now doubles as my writing area. In fact the reason I chose the flat was because the bay window was perfect for a bigger writing desk, and the estuary view inspiring (if you ignore the car park).

One of the UK writing magazines does a ‘Where I write’ feature every month, which I love. So I thought I’d share my current writing space with you.

As you can see I have a fondness for elephants–nothing at all to do with my name being Ellie. Honest.

On the left is my blog calendar. If I don’t note everything down, I will forget. Underneath the calendar is my current work-in-progress word count. The boxes contain all my writing and Star Trek magazines. The folders contain my current projects. I have a few good luck charms: a NaNoWriMo mug, robot USB hub, and various bookmarks.

Finally, the other side of my desk:

Neil Armstrong is hiding in the right-hand corner. You can just see the car park through the window, and beyond that is the River Exe.

So that is my writing space. What is yours like? Do have your own room or desk, or do you make do with whatever space you can find? Do you have a dream writing area? What would it be like if money and space were no object?

Book Blurb

Nine dark fiction stories that may just give you nightmares.

A man lives to regret Passing Time. A father will do anything to save his son in Expiration Date. An author finds out her worst nightmare is back in The Devil’s Song. A woman gets more than the claim fee when she takes out vampire insurance in Luna Black.

In Dining in Hell, the Death Valley Diner becomes the wrong place to stop.

A serial killer wants to add another file to his collection in The Vegas Screamer. In Eating Mr. Bone, an undertaker could meet an unfortunate end. A con man meets his first ghost in Land of the Free. And will truth finally be set free in The Letter?

Character Closeups with EJ Wesley and Writers4Writers

I'm cutting back a bit on blogging for the next few weeks in order to concentrate on writing before the craziness of the A-Z in April Challenge begins, so a few of the Polar Night characters are taking up the slack for me this week.

Danny, Aleksei, and Amanda are visiting with one of my favorite blogger buddies, the totally awseome E.J. Wesley, at his site The Open Vein.

E.J. recently started a new series called Character Closeups, and my characters and I are thrilled to be part of it. Danny is up first, so if you'd like to get to know a bit more about my protagonist visit E.J.'s site here.

I'm offering a free ebook copy of Polar Night at the end of the week, so be sure to stop by E.J.'s if you are interested.

Thank you to E.J. for including me in his series!

Also, today is the day for another round of Writers4Writers! This month's featured writers are Angela Brown and Kyra Lennon, so congratulations to these two fantastic writers!!

If you want to join in and help spread the word about these two authors and their great works, visit the W4WS page here for all the info about this monthly project.

I hope everyone had a great weekend and has a good week ahead. In addition to spending time concentrating on my writing this week, I am really looking forward to the start of March Madness. Go Buckeyes! :D

Hope to see you over at E.J.'s place this week. I'll be popping back in here on Thursday for The Big Reveal A-Z Theme Hop and to share a guest post from the wonderful Ellie Garratt

Witch's Nocturne Release and Happy New Year!

Source: Wikimedia Commons

Hello and Happy New Year!

It's great to be back in blog land after taking a break for Christmas. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday.

I can't think of a better way to get back to blogging than by helping spread the word about EJ Wesley's newest release, Witch's Nocturne. Congratulations to EJ! Witch's Nocturne is the second book in his Moonsongs series and I know it will be another great read.

I wish everyone a very Happy and Healthy New Year, and I'll see you all on Wednesday for the first Insecure Writer's Support Group meeting of 2013!

Now on to Witch's Nocturne:

~Description~

After receiving an ancient tribal journal from her grandfather, Jenny is sent on a mission of discovery in an attempt to unravel clues to her family's monster hunting past. The journey becomes more than academic when she is asked to confront a coven of dangerous witches who plan to cast an insidious spell on the plains of West Texas.

Witch's Nocturne is the second of the Moonsongs Books, a series of New Adult, paranormal-horror-action novelettes--with a Texas twist--by author E.J. Wesley

~Excerpt~

My fingers tapped out an excited, tuneless rhythm on the steering wheel as I drove Beauty, my licorice black 4x4 truck, across town. Maybe the sudden change in the weather and the influx of warm, November sunshine brightened the gorgeous day and my spirits in equal measure. Or maybe, God help me, I was happy to be on my way to see Marshal again. Regardless, I couldn’t recall the last time a day held so much hope, like I’d been given a cheat code for infinite possibilities.

“How’s life?” Marshal asked, foisting himself into the cab of the truck.

He placed a brown, leather satchel between his feet on the floorboard. Marshal stared at me over the top of a pair of oversized, mirrored sunglasses. Combined with the plaid shorts, flip flops and pink polo shirt with a crocodile on it, he appeared to be beach ready. Or headed to a photo shoot for a store I wouldn’t be caught dead in.

“Fast.” I grinned and revved the engine.

He gave me a worried look, rushing to buckle his seatbelt. “You can’t afford another ticket.”

“Relax, Mr. Public Safety. I was kidding. Mostly. Where we headed?”

He patted the saddlebag between his legs. “I’ve gone through everything in here fifty times and have more questions than when I started. I wanted to go to the college library, try to learn more about your grandfather's tribe. Find some language books.”
“So, we go to the library and learn about the tribe and the journal. Shouldn't be too hard. Texas is chock full of Native American history. I imagine there'll be lots of stuff on the Apache at a big university.”

Marshal shook his head, his spiky blond hair staying perfectly still.

“It won’t be that easy. Apache was a catchall term given to several tribes. They were nomads. Historians had a devil of a time trying to keep track of any one group—not to mention they weren't exactly friendly to outsiders. The name Apache was given to most of the warring, wandering tribes in the area.”

“Knew my cuddly personality couldn’t be all my own doing. How’ll we know which specific tribe Gramps belonged to?”

I turned onto the state highway that would lead us to Lubbock. It'd take us about an hour to get there, assuming there was no traffic. By traffic I meant some old farmer taking up both lanes of the highway with his tractor.

Marshal pulled the journal from the bag and flipped open the front cover. He held the book up, pointing to the inside corner.

“I think it's this.”

The word Navezgane had been branded into the leather.

“Cool. Wonder what it means?”

I started to make a joke about the word hopefully not translating to Squats-in-Woods or something. One glance at Marshal’s troubled face told me I was going to like the real name a lot less.

“I looked it up online. The word means killer of monsters.

Interview with Cherie Reich and Blood Fugue Blogfest

I had the opportunity to interview Cherie Reich about her recently released "Gravity: The Complete Trilogy" for my Books column and, as always, it was great to chat with Cherie. I learned about a great opportunity as a result, as Cherie is currently running a giveaway on Goodreads for two print copies of the trilogy. To enter to win this excellent series, visit the Gravity page here. And if you'd like to read the interview, it's available here.

Speaking of giveaways, E.J. Wesley is offering some amazing prizes (including a Nook!) as part of his Bury the Hatchet Blogfest to celebrate the official release of his novelette Blood Fugue.

Jenny, the main character of Blood Fugue, deals with heartache by burying a hatchet in the thing she is struggling with. So in keeping with that spirit, E.J. has asked blogfest participants to share something that angers us and that we'd like to bury a hatchet in, Jenny style.

Since I write regularly about animal rescues and hear way too many horror stories about animals who have been abused and neglected, I'd like to bury my hatchet in those who abuse animals and treat them as disposable objects. It's beyond me how people can be so cruel and heartless and I think they are all deserving of the hatchet treatment.

As far as Blood Fugue and the blogfest details, here's all you need to know, straight from E.J. himself:

Author E.J. Wesley is launching his latest title, BLOOD FUGUE, and wants you to help him celebrate! Check out his blog The Open Vein for details on how to take part, and how to enter for a chance to win some sweet prizes!

What's BLOOD FUGUE about?

Armed only with an ancient family journal, her rifle, and an Apache tomahawk, Jenny must save her grandfather’s life and embrace her dangerous heritage. Or be devoured by it. Blood Fugue, by E.J. Wesley, is the first of the Moonsongs books, a series of paranormal-action novelettes.

BLOOD FUGUE is available now via Smashwords, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble and most other eBook retailers. Check out the author on Goodreads!

Huge congratulations to both Cherie and E.J. on their new releases!!

E.J. Wesley's Cover Reveal Party

I've been on an unplanned blogging hiatus due to distractions stemming from a very busy start of the new school year at the college where I work (damn real life anyway) but I am jumping back into the blogging pool today to help celebrate E.J. Wesley's cover reveal party for his book BLOOD FUGUE. E.J. is totally awesome and one of my favorite bloggers out there, so it's a treat to be able to join in his celebrations. Woo-hoo E.J.!

Here is all you need to know, straight from the man himself:

Author E.J. Wesley is throwing a blog party to celebrate the release of his new book cover and wants you to join in the fun. Jump over to his blog to learn about how you can win some awesome prizes, including $50 toward a cover of your own and advance reader copies of Blood Fugue.

The Rocking Cover!

What's the Story About?

“Some folks treated the past like an old friend. The memories warmed them with fondness for what was, and hope for what was to come. Not me. When I thought of long ago, my insides curdled, and I was left feeling sour and wasted.”

Jenny Schmidt is a young woman with old heartaches. A small town Texas girl with big city attitude, she just doesn’t fit in. Not that she has ever tried. She wears loneliness like a comfy sweatshirt. By the age of twenty-one, she was the last living member of her immediate family. Or so she thought…

"We found my ‘grandfather’ sitting at his dining room table. An entire scorched pot of coffee dangled from his shaky hand. His skin was the ashen gray shade of thunderclouds, not the rich mocha from the photo I’d seen. There were dark blue circles under each swollen red eye. A halo of white hair skirted his bald head, a crown of tangles and mats. Corpses had more life in them.”

Suddenly, instead of burying her history with the dead, Jenny is forced to confront the past. Armed only with an ancient family journal, her rifle, and an Apache tomahawk, she must save her grandfather’s life and embrace her dangerous heritage. Or be devoured by it.

BLOOD FUGUE by E.J. Wesley, is the first of the MOONSONGS books, a series of paranormal-action novelettes. At fewer than 13k words, BLOOD FUGUE is the perfect snack for adventurous readers who aren’t afraid of stories with bite. Available wherever fine eBooks are sold September 2012.
