A Kindle, Finally!

I'm so excited, as I got a new Kindle yesterday, and I am already totally in love with it. I've been thinking about getting one forever, but for the longest time I thought I would hate it as I was sure I would never want to read a book electronically. I was insistent that I wanted a "real book" that I could hold in my hands.

But then I remembered that I had the exact same opinion when Ipods first became popular. I was certain I would always want cds. Then I got an Ipod, and it became my favorite toy ever. I've always been a music nut, and the Ipod only added to that, as I sampled music I never would have thought of buying otherwise. I have a feeling the Kindle will turn out the same, and will merely add to my love of reading by allowing me to discover authors I may have otherwise missed.

One thing I am very excited about with the Kindle is that I will now have the chance to read more of the works of my blogging pals. Ever since I became active in blogging, I have wanted to be able to read so many of the books I see on blogs, but when I tried reading them using the e-reader on my laptop it just didn't work for me, and bothered my eyes. Now I'm looking forward to going back and checking out all of the books I have missed, and also being able to participate in more book launches in the future. I'm excited that the Kindle gives me the opportunity to indulge my love of reading while also supporting my fellow bloggers!

I already downloaded a few last night, including Semper Audacia by M.Pax, and, in the spirit of the season, The Christmas Village by Melissa Goodwin and Once Upon a December Nightmare by Cherie Reich. I can't wait to read all of them.

In honor of my new toy, I decided to start writing reviews here on my blog, hopefully once a week. I've been wanting to try my hand at book reviews, as I thought it would be a great chance to sharpen my own writing skills while at the same time supporting other writers, so I feel like now is a great time to get that started. I hope to start sharing my reviews this week.

I am hoping that writing reviews will also help me to get back on track with regular blogging, as there is no question I have neglected that this month while I have focused on my WIP. I'm still thrilled to be making progress on that front, but I have missed blogging.

I only hope that now I don't end up spending so much time with my nose in my Kindle that I end up neglecting writing and blogging both! I need to make sure that doesn't happen, but I can't deny that organizing time is not my strong suit. I'm almost as bad at organization as I am at following directions. ;)

I hope everyone who celebrated Thanksgiving had a wonderful holiday, and I am looking forward to catching up with all the blogs I have missed this week.

  1. You are going to have so much fun with your Kindle! I didn't think I wanted one either, but quickly became addicted to it. It's amazing how many great books you can get for free or less than $3.

  2. I have no problem reading books on the Kindle but can't stand doing so on the computer, even my laptop. Still, I like to switch over to print books every so often.

  4. Oh my word. You are one lucky duck. My husband asked me if I wanted one for Christmas, and I said no...but...my practical side is fighting with my other side. ;)

  5. Yeahhhh! I love my kindle and you can get so many free or really cheap books :) I find I'm reading so much more and also reading books I might not have bought in the print version.

Will look forward to the reviews. I'm always looking out for new stuff to download :)

  7. I love my Kindles (Kindle 2 and Kindle Fire).

I'm reading M. Pax's Semper Audacia off and on between book review books. :) I hope you enjoy Once Upon a December Nightmare.

  8. I tried to steal my dad's Kindle over Thanksgiving, but it turns out he actually likes the stupid thing. Damn. Now I have to figure out how to get one out of Santa without actually having been good this year. :P

  9. @Janel, thanks again for the suggestion on the book site, I can't wait to find the free and cheap books! :D

@Karen, yeah, I had a terrible time trying to read on my laptop, it just bothered my eyes too much. I am looking forward to checking out your books on the Kindle. :)

@Carrie, thanks, I know I will. I'm so excited to have it LOL.

@Michelle, I ended up using the money I got for my Cat Fancy article for it, I wanted to buy myself a treat with that so this was perfect. My other side definitely won out LOL.

@Karen, thanks, I think I will love mine too.

@CaroSCAT, I think I will end up the same way, that's what I've seen so many people say, that they end up reading more this way. I'm really thrilled to have it.

    @Julie, thanks!!

@Cherie, I'm sure I will, I've been looking forward to reading it for a while.

@LG, LOL, your poor dad. Maybe it's not too late for you to mend your ways so that Santa will bring you something besides a lump of coal. :D

  14. It took me a year to decide to finally get a Kindle, which I did, two summers ago. And I love it. It hasn't replaced paper books, but it sure makes traveling easier, and I love being able to get books instantly.

    Glad you're enjoying yours!

  16. Congratulations! A new Kindle with my name on it is now in the house, but I won't be getting it until Christmas. Can't wait!

  17. @Yvonne, thank you! So far I have to agree with your friend, I think it's wonderful too. :)

@Tara, thanks! I'm really looking forward to catching up on all the books I haven't been able to read.

@LynnMarie, that's one reason I wanted it. Last week I had to wait forever for an appointment, and I was wishing I had it then so I could read to pass the time.

@Carol, I just saw your post, so funny we both posted about the same thing! I hope you enjoy your toy as well. :)

@Jennifer, I know I will look forward to reading your sequel to Creep on there! :) But I agree, I don't think it will ever totally replace print books for me.

@Hilary, thank you! Cheers to you as well. :)

@Susan, oh, how fun! At least you won't have to wait too long for your present. :)

  18. I've heard other people say great things about a Kindle, but I'm still not sold of the idea. I've been working for years to build a library of hard cover classics, and my collections not nearly complete yet. Now, on the other hand - I've embraced the whole IPod library thing.

  19. @Kara, it's the IPod just the best? I can't live without mine now, and I was so resistant to getting one in the beginning. I can see what you mean about the hardcover collection. I still don't want to give up on print books but this is definitely a fun toy.

  20. im the same way about the Kindle. About only wanting to read "real books" that i can hold in my hand and keep. I really only like reading books because i love looking at the beautiful cover designs on the book.

  21. Everyone is getting e-readers. I feel so left out. Oh well, I still have enough unread books in my house to last several years unless I start finishing a book a day--then they'll only last about 3 years.
    Congratulations on your cool acquisition.

  22. Congrats on your Kindle!! My fave part of mine is being able to beta read from it as well as send my own stories to read in book format... I catch so many more plot holes that way.
Plus, instant gratification of getting a book within seconds is just awesome.... and no one can see what you're reading. ;)

  23. @Reina, I totally agree about the cover art, so many times the cover is what draws me to a book in the store. I definitely know I will still love getting print books too.

@Lee, I thought I was the only person that didn't have an e-reader already, I felt totally left out LOL. It's funny too as I always still have tons of unread books at my house, so now I'm just adding to my list I guess.

@Pk, yeah, I already love the instant gratification! Oh, I will have to explore how to use it more, I didn't think about being able to read my story in book format but that does sound so helpful! Thanks!

  24. Fun! I still get certain books in print and certain ones on Kindle, but I do enjoy being more willing to check out new authors via the Kindle.

I've read M. Pax's book, but not the others. Will have to check them out!

  25. You will continue to fall madly and deeply in love with your e-reader! I've got a nook and it's like an appendage. I never go anywhere without it.

  26. @Shannon, yeah, I think that's how I will be too, still have a combination of both.

@Liz, I'm sure that is how I will be, I already totally love it.
