National Dog Day and Wickedly They Come

August 26 is National Dog Day and Clancy is thrilled to have the chance to celebrate.

National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by pet lifestyle and author expert Colleen Paige. The day is an opportunity to raise awareness of and encourage dog rescue and adoption while also celebrating the joy of family dogs and the selflessness of service dogs, police dogs, search and rescue dogs and all of the working dogs who do so much to enrich our world.

My way of celebrating the day is to share a few more rescue dogs from my area who are waiting for their forever homes. Click on each dog's name for information on how to adopt them.

Buster from Three Sisters Pet Rescue

Nina from Fourgotten Paws Animal Rescue
Stella from the SPCA of Cincinnati
Nightingale from the Kenton County Animal Shelter
When I searched Petfinder for these dogs, I unfortunately found more than 5700 homeless dogs within 100 miles of Cincinnati! To find adoptable dogs in your area, simply go to Petfinder.com, enter your city or zip code, and limit your search to dogs.

The Dog Day site has many suggestions for how to celebrate the day, including donating time, money or supplies to a local shelter, writing your congressperson and asking for their support in efforts to ban puppy mills, assisting an elderly neighbor with walking their dog, or simply showering your own dog with extra love and goodies. For the full list of suggestions, click here.

I'd hate to imagine a world without dogs in it so I think this is a day that is definitely worth celebrating. However, someone in my house disagrees and feels like the whole thing is a waste of time and energy.

I promised Nate that National Cat Day is coming up in October so he was at least somewhat appeased.

In other news, this past weekend was a big one for my friend Cathrina Constantine, as her debut novel Wickedly They Come was released out into the world! Yay!

Cathrina is hosting a big giveaway to celebrate her release and you can find all the details, as well as read an excerpt from the book, here.

I happen to know that Cathrina is a dog (and cat) lover so I didn't think she'd mind sharing a post with the dogs. :D Congratulations, Cathy!

  9. I would be like the weird dog lady with too many sleeping on my furniture if left to my impulses. So sweet!

  10. They are so cute! I have a friend who does a foster home for animals until they get a permanent one. She does it not just for dogs though but ferrets and skunks and such too. It's pretty neat.

The cover looks beautiful. I'll head over.

  11. I'm so glad you are doing this, Julie. So far, the only thing I don't like about being the age I am, is that it is not feasible for me to rescue a whole bunch of dogs and cats.

  12. @Julie, I would too. If only! I'd take in all of them if I could.

@Summer, oh, that's awesome that your friend fosters. Good for her!

@Inger, I wish I could rescue them all, I'd love to have more room and money but it's not feasible for me either at this point. I hope these cuties all find homes. <3

  13. Such a shame that there are so many, but so happy to see so many doing their best to change that - including you! Awesome!

    Congrats Cathrina!

  14. Thanks for the plug, Julie. And I don't mind sharing, in fact, I love sharing this post!! I love and adore all animals. Our pets provide us with unconditional love. There are no bad pets, only some bad owners.

  18. Nice cover, Cathrina! Wicked, indeed.

Woof woof! I don't own a dog, but I like them well enough. Was just thinking about Woody the other day and how much fun we all used to have [him, and my siblings].

  27. cute - I have to say National Dog Day was lost on me. With a high maintenance dog every day is a dog day.

  28. The only thing bad about going to a shelter is when I see the dogs and cats there, I want to bring 'em ALL home. I hope all the pooches you're featuring today find good homes.

Congrats to Cathrina on her book release. Neat looking cover! Here's to much success with it.

  29. Congrats Cathrina! Your cover and title are awesome! :-)

Julie - it's so sad about all those dogs waiting for a home. Dogs are so loyal and loving - they brig happiness to any home. Thanks for featuring some of them on your post. :-)

  30. Aw, it was National Dog Day? Wish I'd known, since I'm a total dog-lover! So sad to learn about all those homeless dogs, though...

On a completely unrelated note, I just wanted to let you know that I finally had the chance to read Polar Night this month and loved it! I read it in one sitting. :)

  31. @Ciara, that's just how I feel.

@David, LOL my dog is high maintenance too so I know what you mean.

@Susan, yeah, I can't go to shelters really, I get sad seeing the animals and want to scoop up all of them.

    @Lexa, isn't it? I totally agree.

@Heather, oh, thanks!!! This made my day! I'm so glad you liked it. :)

  35. Julie,

Just coming back to an old post that seemed interesting, as much as I love dogs. Love, love, love them. (Cats are another story...I like other people's cats...would not own one)

5700? So sad. I wish I could make sure they were all taken care of.

  36. @Michael, isn't it terrible? I couldn't believe when I saw 5700 dogs. And Cincinnati isn't even a big city so I can't imagine how bad it must be in places like NY or LA.
