Adopt A Shelter Dog Month

October is Adopt A Shelter Dog month and I couldn't let the month pass without giving a shout-out to my favorite former shelter dog in the world, Clancy, of course. Here he is making himself comfortable on the couch and watching football with Nate and me.

Yes, they are spoiled. :D

An estimated 8 to 10 million animals enter shelters in the United States every year so there are obviously tons of dogs waiting for homes at shelters all over the country. If you're interested in adding a dog to your family, consider adopting a shelter dog and giving one of these millions of homeless animals a safe and happy forever home.

You can find a dog in your area by visiting Petfinder, entering your city or zip code, and limiting your search to dogs. When I did this search, there were more than 190,000 homeless dogs listed near my area. I can't imagine how many would come up if I lived in a really big city.

If you'd like to help out but are unable to adopt, Petfinder has a great list here of simple ways to help spread the word and make a difference. The list includes things like adding a Petfinder widget to your site or posting on Twitter about the month. Here's an example of a tweet from the list: “October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month. Here's hoping lots of shelter dogs find new homes during this special month.

  1. The best dogs are always mutts from a shelter.

  2. Agreed. Our dog is a rescue dog and she's the best dog I've ever had. We spoil her, too. ;)

  3. Sir Poops was bought from a breeder who said he wouldn't be a good show dog. He was bigger than all the other Chinese Crested pups.

Hair Ball was bought from an animal hoarder. Thank God, I was able to save him. He was one little knot ball when I brought him home.

    Hugs and chocolate,
    Shelly

  4. Shelter dogs are the best! Though they do tend to grow into the biggest couch hogs ever. :)

(also, hoping you got my email the other day ???)

  6. We've fostered a couple of dogs before and we adopted a cat from a shelter about 5 years ago. Right now, Shelter Cat is snoring happily on top of the kitchen table...he pretty much runs the joint!

Happy to see you among my followers this morning! Thanks so much for stopping by!

    Cheers,
    Jen

  7. Our dog is a rescue dog, although he does have some very peculiar hangups which make taking him for walks almost impossible. Even so, he's pretty sweet :-)

  8. @Jen, my cat runs my house too LOL. You're very welcome and thanks to you as well.

@Annalisa, Clancy definitely has some hangups too but I figure I do too so we are a good match LOL.

  9. Julie, I'm so glad you posted this because I didn't know it was Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. I've had only three dogs in my life, beginning with a free puppy, Rokcy, when I was 30 years old! Then we got Tiger at a local Humane Society, and we got Vern at another local Humane shelter. I truly believe mutts are the best pets, and especially when rescued. They are so happy and grateful for being saved and loved! (Can dogs "feel" grateful??)

  12. @Becky, aww, I think they can. Although I don't know if Clancy is. He seems to think he is simply getting what he is owed LOL. You know I love Vern and I bet Rocky and Tiger were adorable too. <3

@Cecilia, thanks! I definitely can't resist it LOL.

  16. We have had nine dogs, all rescues, except Red, who was a puppy of a rescue, and Samson, who sort of was a rescue, an in our family rescue. None of them rescued from a shelter. We would have if these dogs had not just either appeared on our doorstep or been found starving in the streets of Los Angeles. I would never buy a dog, not with so many shelter or stray dogs needing homes.

  17. My favorite dog was a shelter dog. I have so many great memories of her. Great post.

  18. His face has so much character, and he looks like he has his paw on the remote!

We adopted a delightful rescue dog this summer and I think it's the best thing we've done as a family. It's helped our youngest one become more caring as she now has a "little sister" and she's brought all of us closer together.

  19. Love that there are dogs finding homes every day and wish there were more homes who would take a lovable, slightly used cat or dog into their heart.

  20. @Sheena-kay, thank you!

@Inger, I agree, I've had three cats now and one dog and they were/are all rescues. All wonderful too. <3

    @Tonja, thanks!

@Nick, that's so cute to think of your youngest with a little canine sister. And you're right about Clancy and the remote, I didn't notice that LOL.

@Julie, aww, slightly used is a great way to put it. <3

  21. Oh, what a sweet picture! He looks like a love. I agree with Alex - I can't imagine getting a dog from anywhere but a shelter.

  22. We want another pup as a sibling for the one we got last year. He's so bouncy and wants a sister. I tried the Petfinder, but it doesn't do out location (Dubai) :( We'll keep looking. Thanks Julie, that picture is so cute and reminds me of our Bobby X

  23. Aw, Clancy is just the cutest! I have a shelter dog, and she definitely gets spoiled, too...heh. It's always so sad to see how many dogs are still homeless, so I think it's great how you're helping to spread the word about this!

  24. Awww. So cute! Love it. I have an amazing shelter dog. Best little girl ever!

  25. @Liz, thanks! He is a love even though he is spoiled LOL.

@Shah, I hope you find the puppy you want. I wish this search could go international. Good luck and thanks!

@Heather, I think shelter dogs deserve to be spoiled with the start they had LOL. I know, I wish there weren't still SO many, it's so sad to imagine.

    @Rebecca, aww, I bet she is. <3

  26. I wish everyone would consider shelter dogs before looking for a new puppy. We got both our cairns from breeders before I knew about the great need for homes. Later, I volunteered with a cairn rescue group and found a love for the rescued dog. I hope lots of sweet dogs are find homes this winter.

  27. @Brinda, I think it's great that there are so many rescue groups for all different breeds now. Such a fantastic idea. I hope they lots find homes too. <3
