Favorite Cat Rescues, the Realms Faire, and Friday Celebrations

Since National Cat Day was this week I thought I would share some of my favorite cat rescues for this week's Friday Faves. These organizations all do amazing work!

Best Friends Animal Society

As I've mentioned before, writing for Best Friends changed my life and signing up to volunteer for them was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Someday I hope to visit Best Friends in Kanab, Utah and take a trip to Cat World which is, in their words, "a place where cats rule."

Tabby's Place

Thanks to Best Friends I got to know the amazing people and cats of Tabby's Place in Ringoes, New Jersey. Tabby's Place is a cat sanctuary dedicated to bringing hope to cats in hopeless situations. They care for numerous special needs cats and are known for finding forever homes for cats thought to be "unadoptable." I wrote a story for Cat Fancy about three kittens who were rescued by a US marine in Japan and came clear across the world to Tabby's Place, where they ultimately found a home with a woman in Pennsylvania. Tabby's Place is an extraordinary and one-of-a-kind place.

Ohio Alleycat Resource

Located here in Cincinnati, OAR is a low-cost spay/neuter clinic for cats that also runs a cat rescue. The clinic has performed more than 6900 spay/neuter surgeries so far this year, cutting down exponentially on the number of unwanted cats and kittens in our area. The rescue, which houses as many as 90-100 cats at any given time, has taken in more than 200 cats and adopted out nearly as many so far in 2013.

Purrfect Friends Cat Rescue

Another Cincinnati rescue, Purrfect Friends is an all-volunteer organization which relies on foster families to care for their rescued cats. The Purrfect Friends won this Game of Thrones fanatic's heart when they named a group of adorable kittens after GoT characters. Little mother of dragons Daenerys is still waiting for her forever home.

Paws & Claws Animal Rescue

Paws & Claws is based across the river from Cincinnati in Northern Kentucky and is another rescue that relies entirely on foster families to house its animals. The tireless volunteers of Paws & Claws operate under the motto "one by one until there are none." While they are not limited to cats, they always have numerous cats and kittens available for adoption.

Moving on from the kitties, I want to thank everyone who participated in my October giveaway. Jossie at Dreaming of Publication won the Polar Night ebook and $10 Amazon gift card. Enjoy, Jossie!

Instead of a monthly giveaway in November I am participating in a mega-giveaway with my Untethered Realms buddies as part of this year's Realms Faire. The faire will be held from November 11-15 and there will be lots of fun, lots of prizes, and lots of chances to win. Visit host M. Pax here for more details and stay tuned for info on our big prize!

For this week's Celebrate the Small Things hop I was hoping to be able to celebrate the Bengals beating the Dolphins last night and going to 7-2. Unfortunately that didn't work out, to the surprise of none of us who follow the Bengals. If there's one thing the Bengals excel at it's taking the wind out of fans' sails.

But they're still in first place and my Buckeyes are rolling at 8-0 so I'm celebrating a fun football season so far and keeping my fingers crossed that the rest of the season will bring more to celebrate.

Also, it's been a long and tiring week here so I'm mostly celebrating the fact that the weekend is here. I hope everyone has a great one. :)

  1. At least the Buckeyes are kicking butt. I guess Miami's quarterback was a good addition to the team. (They just picked him up a week ago - fast learner.)
    That's great there are so many rescue places in your area.

  2. I hear you about it being a long week. A good one overall for me but long just the same. :)

    Have a good weekend, Julie!

  3. National Cat Day is the best day of the year :D

    And I feel the same about the Yankees sometimes...*sigh*

    Have a great weekend!

  5. Awww to them cats. I hope they find their homes soon.

  6. If my hubby weren't so realistic, I'd be one of those crazy old cat ladies with a house crawling with those little guys and gals. It's sooooo hard to resist all those cuties in need of a home.

    Your Bengals are giving you a lot more to celebrate this year than our Falcons are. Hopes were soaring before the season began, but they're having more trouble getting this season off the ground than a bunch of drunken goonie birds.

    Happy weekend!

  7. Aww those cats are adorable, I hope they find loving homes soon!

  8. @Alex, yeah, I thought sure the Bengals would be able to manage a brand new qb but he picked the right team to get started against.

    @Madeline, thanks, you too!

    @Melissa, isn't he? He reminds me a little of the cat we had when I was a kid.

    @Samantha, my cat Nate would agree with you. :D

    @Suzanne, I know, I wish they had room there for all the cats in need, there are so many!

    @SK, I hope so too, thanks.

    @Susan, LOL, drunken goonie birds is classic. :D I also could easily descend into crazy cat woman mode, need to watch myself.

    @Laura, I hope so too, fingers crossed!

  9. Yesterday at our Halloween party, one person came as a "Crazy Cat Lady" and had a robe with all these stuffed animal cats hanging off of it. I laughed because it was very original.

  10. It's fortunate that there are shelters who work hard at placing precious cats into loving homes. Your article in Cat World sounds amazing!

    @Julie, thanks!

    @Lee, that's true, they do. Maybe it's because they believe it to be the case LOL.

    @Dana, thanks, you too!

  19. So many cute kitties needing homes. My mother-in-law had an adopted cat that was so dear to her. THey make great companions.

  20. @Julie, they really do. I've loved all of the cats I've had.

  21. I adore cats and have had several over the years. It's wonderful you're highlighting the shelters so people know about them. Great pics of cats, too! Sorry about the Bengals, but Yay for the Buckeyes and a weekend of relaxation. :-)

    @Shelly, aww, Mr. Levy must have been a cutie. Thanks for the hugs and chocolate. :)

  31. Way to go, Jossie! These cat photos remind me of George, the little kitten we had to give away when I was a kid because my 2-year-old sister wouldn't stop trying to strangle him. I'm sure George lived a much happier life elsewhere...

  32. Hope you are having a fun, relaxing weekend! I'm thankful for the weekend too this week.

    Love the cat rescues! My favorite local rescue is Harbor Hope Cat Rescue. The owner/director takes in cats of all kinds, but she specializes in cats that no one else keeps - the ones that have physical disabilities, and she brings in volunteers to socialize with them, and then she finds them loving homes. It's a great place.

    Love this post!

  33. We got our dog from a rescue organisation here in the UK that do great work. I'm glad there are so many people willing to give up time to help them. If they're in a good environment, cats do think the whole world is Cats' World, though!

  34. I love the work they do at Best Friends and have been with them since they first started. During the recession, I was unable to contribute and felt so bad, but am starting up again. I hope you get to visit them. This was a lovely post, thanks for bringing the cats to our attention.

  35. Hope you've had a relaxing weekend, Julie! All those cat rescues sound amazing...

  37. @Milo, aww, I hope George did have a long and happy life. :)

    @Tyrean, oh, that sounds like Tabby's Place. It's so great to know that people are doing this kind of work all over the country, always makes me feel good to read about it.

    @Nick, they definitely do LOL.

    @Inger, yeah, I just love Best Friends. One of these days I will make it there.

    @Heather, I did, thanks!

    @Brinda, thanks for checking it out, I think it will be a fun giveaway. :)
