“Do I dare
Disturb the UNIVERSE?"
~ T.S. Eliot
This is one of my favorite lines from my favorite poem, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S. Eliot. I first read this poem when I was in college and it's stuck with me ever since. For the narrator of the poem, the answer to the above question was no. As he says himself, "in short, I was afraid."
I've spent most of my life being afraid to disturb my own universe but embarking on this writing journey was the one time I took a leap and dared. I'm so glad that I was finally able to get to the point where I could answer yes to Eliot's question.
I have been crazy busy this week and am participating in the Ohioana Book Festival this weekend so I have fallen way behind on my blog reading and I'm sorry for that. Thank you to everyone who has come by here and commented. I will get caught up next week before we come to the end of another challenge!
Have a great weekend, all.

I don't want to break the universe.

ReplyDeleteEnjoy the book festival - it'll be loads of fun .. cheers Hilary
Writing and putting ourselves out there is a pretty bold leap for the more timid among us! But who knows what will happen.
ReplyDeleteHave fun at the festival! Hope it all goes well. :)
ReplyDeleteI need to read that poem!
ReplyDeleteHave fun at the festival. :)
Trust me, I've been a way worse blogger than you.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the book festival. :)
The Hubble Telescope is celebrating 25 years of photographing the Universe this week with some stupendous pictures.
ReplyDeleteIt's the line "With a bald spot in the middle of my hair -" that seems to have applied to me.
Yes and no . . . depends on the day. Excellent quote and thoughts!
ReplyDeleteGreat quote and picture to go with it. I liked that poem too. It's been years since I read it. Nice reminder of a poet I like.
ReplyDeleteI think the universe needs a bit of disturbing every now and then. Have a great weekend :-)

What a fascinating quote! Sometimes disturbing our universe is what we need.
ReplyDeleteHave fun at the Ohioana Book Festival!
I remember that poem; read it back in English class my sophomore year of high school. I didn't understand it then and I don't know if I understand it now.
ReplyDeleteBut as a writer, I think it's my job to disturb the universe, even if only a little bit, via myself or how others see my work. ^_^
I detest T. S. Eliot, but I kind of like Prufrock, who wears the bottoms of his trousers rolled. I never needed Eliot to encourage me to disturb the universe. I've been disturbed and a disturber all along.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Universe is my word as well!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the book festival.
You will have fun at this festival. The Universe always needs a good poke:)
ReplyDeleteA book festival? How exciting! Hope it goes well! :)
