K is for Kindness

"The everyday KINDNESS of the back roads more than makes up for the acts of greed in the headlines." ~  Charles Kuralt

As I find nearly all headlines depressing nowadays, I really liked this quote when I came upon it. In the face of so much violence, hate, greed, corruption, and cruelty it's good to remember that there are kind and good-hearted people everywhere, in every corner of the world, just going about their lives. I've certainly met plenty of them here in blog land. :)

I'm managed to get way behind in my blog reading and commenting and I apologize for that! I am going to work to get caught up today. I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.

  1. You just don't often hear about those stories because they're deemed not interesting or newsworthy enough. If an alien came to our planet and read a newspaper, they would think we were a completely lost cause!

  2. What Nick said. They happen often, we just don't hear about them.

  3. I agree with Nick. It's sad that only the bad makes the headlines. We need to see the good too or the world can seem such a depressing place. And it's not always.

  4. I love that quote! Honestly, that's why I don't read the news anymore. They seem to just want to give us all the terrible things that are happening. There are a lot of great things going on too!

  5. Excellent quote! CNN has a segment called the Good Stuff. It helps to balance out the bad.

  6. The headlines are terrible. But the blogging world is full of such kind people. You are one of them, Julie. :)

  7. I don't know if that quote is necessarily true though, but I do like it.

  8. I have to stop reading the headlines and turn off the news. So much violence and horrible things happening. It is nice to recognize kind people and tell them thank you!

  10. Kindness makes us have faith in humanity. I seldom read the newspaper anymore, only skimming the headlines on my homepage news. It just puts me in a bad frame of mind to hear all the negative stuff, but that is what sells news, and other media.

As for my own actions, I try to be kind and only say what I think about other drivers inside my car where only I can hear it. . .it's safer that way too.

  11. good quote and brings back memories of Charles Kuralt "on the road". Indeed, I think the news just makes things seem so dire. If you really get on the road and just interact with people - most everyone is chill

  14. I remember, when I was little, and there was still UHF-channel 29 in my neck of the woods, there was a 5 minute news called "Good News". I always watched it. We never see the good things that happen but everyone stops to look at an accident. Part of our darkness. I prefer the good things which we see everyday but take for granted. I love that quote!

  16. This is why I love looking at the 'weird news' sections, there's interesting, positive stories. Like a drunk moose in a tree.

  17. Hi, Julie,

Another terrific quote! And yes, kindnesses are found in our every day world ... even in big cites like Chicago.

A close friend of mine lost his wallet on the bus... He freaked, of course, and spent the evening canceling almost everything ... his license had to wait for the next morning for the DMV to open...

Well, he received a phone call from a CTA employee that had found his wallet.

She had called several times to his home number, but since she hadn't contacted him, she finally located the number of his cell in his wallet....

He was thrilled by the call. He immediately went to see her, and his wallet was completely in tact... cash and all...

He tried to offer her a reward, but she refused. "It's part of my job," she said. "I am so happy I was the one who had found it."

Take about an "Earthly Angel" ... I feel a post coming on. LOL

  18. There are usually a few "feel good" stories in the news bulletins each night - but true, most seem to be miserable and horrible.

Those small acts of kindness that make a difference in people's lives daily are so special though.

  19. It's inspiring and encouraging to read about acts of kindness in the news, even though the number of those stories are unfortunately often dwarfed by the number of negative stories of crimes. I read a story recently about a guy walking his dog who saved a kidnapped woman's life, even though he came face to face with the kidnapper. That guy walking his dog showed true courage and compassion.

  21. Hi Julie - yes the quote is good .. but it's the back lanes we travel and where we can most influence ... and give kindness along our journeys and paths to our destiny. A little kindness goes so so far .. cheers Hilary
